La carriera degli Spandau fu costellata di successi e grandi concerti.
Era il 1979 quando i fratelli Gary e Martin Kemp formarono con John Keeble, Steve Norman e Tony Hadley gli Spandau Ballet. Il singolo di debutto, lo ricorderanno in molti, To cut a long story short fece subito breccia nel pubblico ed entrò nelle classifiche dell’epoca. Da lì alla piena affermazione il passo fu breve. Tony Hadley e la band, con quella impostazione new romantic fecero sognare milioni di ragazzine ed influenzarono anche il look del popolo giovane. Nel 1981 uscì il primo album e il singolo Chant Nr 1 che entro in classifica negli USA. Con gli album successivi la band arrivò in testa alle classifiche europee, ma senza dubbio fu il 1986 l’anno che li impose all’attenzione dei fan di tutto il mondo… uscì Through the barricades, brano che è entrato di diritto nella storia della musica.
Il 1988 segnò invece l’inaspettato scioglimento della band.
Memorabile fu la contrapposizione con i Duran Duran e molti videro una nuova era divisa in due grandi gruppi, esattamente com’era successo vent’anni prima con i Beatles e i Rolling Stones.
